we´re glad to present you an another highlight upcoming on the first sarturday of the month june @ liquid sound club / toskana therme bad schandau.
martin juhls from dortmund is considered to be one of the most reputed and leading musicians of the international ambient and chill-out scene. as marsen jules he focuses on condensing melancholy orchester-sounds whilst his project krill.minima emphasises the soft undulating tones and dub chords of a mixture of crunchy crackling beat fragments – accompanied by exotic, dreamlike sounds perfected to a relaxing grooving web of bass and bass drum. whether it is the plonking underwater dubs found in his debut album “nautica” or the numerous public performances as released by the netlabel thinner, the fundamental thread can be found in all his tracks – unusual and seldom heard sounds combined with independently defined smooth pop-appeal. the marked influences go back to timeless composers such as brian eno, erik satie, steve reich and stockhausen as well as modern sound innovators such as sonic youth, autechre, aphex twin, alva noto and einstürzende enubauten. piere henry, “musique-concrete” composer once said: “ everything i hear is potential material” and could be equally applied to juhls´ attitude to music as a whole. it is therefore no surprise that most of krill.minima sounds are not electronically generated. instead, daily sounds are sampled, estranged and made “new”. hi-hat is wet fingers squeaking on a window pane, kick drum is tapping on a cardboard box, the percussion is fingernails scratching on a carpet and chinking bells a japanese wind chime above the windowsill.
